HMV celebrated National Biodiversity Day

National BiodiversityJalandhar May 29 (Jaswinder Azad)- Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya, Jalandhar was selected by National Biodiversity Board to create awareness regarding “Our Biodiversity, Our Food and Health” with the assistance of Punjab Biodiversity Board, Chandigarh. Principal Dr. (Mrs.) Ajay Sareen thanked National Biodiversity Board for the same and said that the institution stands committed for promotion of cultural, traditional and local knowledge about our indigenous varieties. Under this grant, Dr. (Mrs.) Anjana Bhatia and Dr. Monika Mahajan carried out a research study and prepared a report on disappearing millets of Punjab.
Dr. Anjana reported that most of the millets are disappearing from today’s cropping pattern of Punjab. Only Sorghum and Bajra are growing at present and that too only in some districts like Mansa, Hoshiarpur, Ferozepur, Sangrur and Ludhiana. Millets make extraordinary crops as to their nutritional value, ecological value and require very little water. They are rich in iron and provide benefits against diabetes, obesity and iron deficiency. Despite all the benefits associated with millets, farmers are not taking up the farming of millets because of reduced demand. Consumers must take up millets in their diet and promote the cultivation of such indigenous crop. On this occasion, a workshop on Punjab Biodiversity was organized.
Ms. Roopsi Garg from Kheti Virasat Mission apprised the students about Biodiversity of Punjab and need to increase diversity in crops. Approximately 100 students participated in this competition. In Poster making Km. Kudrat of SSC I Medical got first, Km. Nancy of SSC I Arts got Second, Km. Ishita of SSC I Medical got third position respectively. Consolation prize was given to Km.
