National Seminar on Increasing Participation of Women in Science and Technology organized at HMV

Jalandhar March 16 (Jaswinder Azad)- The Equal Opportunity Cell, Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya organized a National Seminar on Increasing Participation of Women in Science and Technology under the inspiring and stimulating counsel of Principal Prof. Dr. (Mrs.) Ajay Sareen and in collaboration with National Commission for Women, Govt. of India. The inaugural function was graced in presence of illustrious personalities Dr. H.S. Bhalla, Deputy Director DPI(C), Pb., Dr. Vinita Sharma, Former Advisor and Head DST and Dr. Purnima Sharma, Managing Director Biotech Consortium. The celebrated guests were welcomed with planters by Justice (Retd.) N.K. Sud, Vice President DAVCMC, New Delhi and Principal Prof. Dr. (Mrs.) Ajay Sareen. The event commenced with the holy lighting of lamp followed by the recital of DAV Anthem. The galaxy of stars present on the occasion included the names of Dr. Saroj, Dr. Jitender, Dr. Sharda, Dr. Ragbir, Dr. Upma and Dr. Prabhjit.
Dr. Ramnita Saini Sharda, Dean Innovation, in the capacity of the master of ceremonies elaborated on the glorious history and unique ventures of the institution.
Introducing the concept note Dr. Anjana Bhatia, Dean Equal Opportunity Cell and coordinator of the seminar, expressed concern for the slight number of women in STEM. An inspiring message for the seminar by Ada Yonath Nobel Laureate and an encouraging video by first woman Vice Chancellor Dr. Pankaj Mittal were showcased. Dr. Mittal urged the women to break the glass ceiling and stereotyped notions and prove their true worth. Dr. Anjana expressed delight in telling that 450 delegates and paper presenters participated in this seminar.
The lady with a scientific temper and vision, Dr. Ajay Sareen welcomed the distinguished guests and put forth a rhetorical question ‘where is the need to organize such seminars’? She remarked that a society sans women is unimaginable and worthless. Gone are the days of male dominated sectors but the change need to be carried further. She also emphasized on the positive role of male counterparts in bringing this change in the society. She told that the aim of this seminar is to work for gender neutralization in every field.
Hon’ble Justice (Retd.) N. K. Sud gave his blessings saying that women themselves can empower their self. This seminar brings them face to face with persons of illustrious career and thus motivate them to achieve success.
The esteemed chief guest, Dr. H.S. Bhalla congratulated the institution and addressed the gathering by shattering the stereotypical idea that women are inferior. He remarked that women are in fact superior to men. Explaining empowerment he said that it comes from position and action and there is no force equal to a determined woman. Though our societal set up poses a threat to women safety but the women need to overcome these problems and prove true to their capability.
The keynote speaker Dr. Vinita Sharma asserted that no nation can progress if half of its population i.e. women are held back. She stated that the pipeline of women participation is massively leaking after the women attain postgraduate and doctoral degrees. She offered some solutions like easy access to science labs, writing scientific stories for young children and fostering and supporting women scientists. She offered a comprehensive view of the situation in India and shared her experiences.
The guests were honoured and presented with phulkaris and gifts prepared by the department of Fine Arts. The gathering enjoyed the mesmerizing performance by Ridhima and a neo-installation performance.
In the technical session Prof. Renu Bhardwaj, Director IQAC GNDU Amritsar delivered the plenary talk. The different parallel sessions were addressed by Dr. Sharda (Jammu) and Dr. Ragbir Singh, Khalsa College, Amritsar and Dr. Purnima Sharma. The young scientists and emerging scholars gave oral presentations and poster presentations.
The winners of Promising Science Communicator competition were Km. Ananya Sharma, Anand Public Sr. Sec. School, Kapurthala and Km. Shivani, DC Model Sr. Sec. School, Ferozepur. The winners of Poster Presentation in school category are – Harjinder Singh stood first, Gurleen Kaur stood second and third position was shared by Kishika, Harpreet and Dhreeti. In the college category first position was won by Vaishali, second by Diksha Thakur and Kajal Pathania and third by Bharti. The first prize in Budding Scientist category (school) was bagged by Gurleen Arora, second by Isha and third by Pratham.
The valedictory session was presided over by esteemed Mrs. Kavita Khanna, a social worker and wife of Ex. Member Parliament Late Sh. Vinod Khanna Ji. Principal Dr. Sareen greeted her by presenting planter. Mrs. Kavita Khanna congratulated the institution for organizing this seminar which will motivate the women to participate in scientific ventures more enthusiastically. Dr. Seema Marwaha, HOD Zoology and Convener gave a vote of thanks. The event concluded with recital of National Anthem. Dr. Neelam Sharma, HOD Chemistry, Dr. Ekta Khosla, Dean Examination, Mrs. Saloni Sharma, HOD Physics, Mr. Harpreet Singh, HOD Bioinformatics, Dr. Jitender, HOD Biotechnology, Mrs. Meenakshi Syal, Coordinator Collegiate School and members of teaching and non-teaching staff were also present on this occasion.
