PPCB URGES FARMERS NOT TO BURN PADDY STRAW

Jalandhar October 8 (Jaswinder Azad)- Continuing its drive to make the people and farmers aware about ill-effects of stubble burning, Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) carried out an awareness drive in various villages on Monday under Tandarust Mission Punjab to eliminate the menace from the state. A team led by PPCB Engineers Mr AK Kakkar and Mr Sandeep Kumar visited villages Ambgarh, Passan, Rahimpur, Kala Bahia, Mand and Shivdasspur falling in Kartarpur block and created awareness among the villagers and farmers regarding the harmful effects of paddy straw burning on the environment and the health.
The officials also convened a meeting with concern panchayat members in each village and were requested to appeal the farmers to not burn the stubble in their fields. The pamphlets were also distributed among the villagers and farmers by PPCB team to tell them about pollution caused by paddy straw burning. The farmers were persuaded to procure the high-tech machines on the rent from co-operative societies to decompose the stubble in the field which increases its fertility rather than burning. The panchayat members assured PPCB team that the farmers in their villages would not burn the stubble and would help in making Punjab clean and green. A spokesperson said that the drive would continue in the coming days so that the stubble burning can be wiped out from the state completely.
